Mineral carbonation – De Beers Group

De Beers scientists have recently begun investigating the potential for carbon to be stored at diamond mines through mineralisation of tailings, the rock material leftover after diamonds are mined. The process that would be used to store carbon in the tailings is called “mineral carbonation” or alternatively “carbon mineralisation”.  Storing carbon in tailings could offset mine emissions, leading to low carbon footprint or even carbon neutral or carbon negative mining operations.
